Frequently Asked Questions

In the following section we will try to answer the most frequently asked questions concering all different kinds of topics. If any of your questions should remain unanswered, please do not hesitate to contact us per mail or per contact form.

General

What is the meaning/origin of your brand name „44INCH“?

Actually pretty simple: 44 inch (or 111,8cm) is the maximum roll width of your largest printer. The maximum length is only limited by the length of the roll.

What's the difference between 44INCH PRINTWORKS and other print studios?

First and foremost we differ from other print studios, because we are photographers ourselves and we can use our knowledge to support your work. We love to work on interesting projects and take part in the creative process.

What is special about giclée prints?

Giclée prints with pigment ink offer a significantly higher dot density than a classical photographic print (720dpi compared to 300dpi) and clearly subtler color and tonal graduations than in the offset or digital print (10 different ink colors compared to 4 ink colors). In addition to it, there is a wide range of high quality fine art papers with lots of different surface textures.

Data

What is the best way to prepare my data?

You can expect the best results from a TIFF or PSD file (reduced to a single background layer), in AdobeRGB color space, 16-bit color depth and the maximum (camera given) resolution.

Which file format should I use?

We recommend TIFF or PSD files for best results but generally we can handle every other established file format like for example: JPEG, PNG, GIF or DNG.

Can I send you PDF files as well?

We can print PDF files as well but we would not recommend it because of the quality loss due to compression.

Papers

What about the ICC profiles for your different papers?

We do not use standard profiles by the manufacturer, instead we write all color profiles by ourselves. If you need an ICC profile for soft proofing reasons, feel free to write us an email and we will send you the appropriate profile.

Is it possible to print on other papers than the ones within your price list?

If you have some special paper needs which can not be satisfied by our paper collection, feel free to write us about it. We are always open for new papers and suggestions and we are looking forward to find a convenient solution for you.

How can I increase the durability of my giclée prints?

To be safe as houses that your prints will stay splendid, you should consider a few things:

1. Use cotton gloves when you handle your prints, because sweat and grease can decrease the durability of your prints.

2. Store your prints on a acid-free and pH-neutral underground.

3. Try to avoid temperature variation. The best environment for your has a air temperature between 19-24°C and a humidity of 30-40%.

4. (If possible) Do not expose your prints to direct sunlight. Optimally display your prints behind a glass with UV protection, this also helps with air contamination.

What is your printing resolution?

We always use the best suitable dot density for each paper based on the recommendation of the paper manufacturer and our own tests. Most of the papers have an ideal resolution of 360 or 720 dpi.

Which profiling and proof technology do you use?

The Epson Stylus Pro 9900 works with the newest ILS30EP Spectroproofer von X-Rite (for a M0, M1 and M2-measurement). The device supports additionally proofing control and profiling according to the latest ISO standard based on FOGRA39 and is future-proofed for FOGRA 51/52 using media with optical brightener.

What kind of ink do you use?

We only use original and top-quality pigment ink from the UltraChrome HDR series by Epson.

What is the difference between bi- and unidirectional printing?

Using “bidirectional” printing means that the print head is printing with each movement (from right to left and on the way back from left to right) while using “unidirectional” printing means that the print head is only printing in one direction. This technique results in a higher print quality and reduces the danger of a vertical misalignment.

How long does it take until my print is ready?

We always try to handle your print job as fast as possible. Your prints are normally ready for pick-up within 48 hours but please be sure to plan some extra time for special services like mounting or framing.

Packaging

Does the packaging cost extra?

A simple packaging is already included in our prices. We will charge an extra fee for more complex and individual packagings for shipping.

What kind of packaging material do you use?

We will wrap your prints in protecting tissue paper and you will get a package made of cardboard for transporting reasons.

We are receiving paper supplies and other goods on a regular basis. So we try to reuse this material as good as possible for new packaging solutions. In line with this, our packages are quite individual and easy on the environment.

Miscellaneous

What will happen to my data when my print job is finished?

We will store your files, in case you want to print them again. This way you do not have to worry about an precise duplication of your work. Otherwise we will delete your files within 14 days after completion of your order.

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept payments with Maestro/EC Cards.

Do you accept cash?

No, we do not accept cash payments because of the bureaucratically effort of keeping an extra accounting book. We prefer to invest this time in your project and in extensive consulting.
